Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

What is a Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Detector?

A smoke alarm is a device that senses smoke, usually an indicator of fire. These are installed in both commercial units and residential homes. A Carbon Monoxide Detector is a device that detects the presence of the odorless, but deadly gas, carbon monoxide. These also come in a combination device with battery backup that is the preferred unit for most customers. It is a hardwired unit that detects both smoke and carbon monoxide and in the case of a power failure, there is a battery backup to ensure the unit still functions correctly.

Is it mandatory to have these in your home?

As of October 15th, 2014, it will be mandatory in all Ontario homes to be fitted with carbon monoxide detectors. In accordance with Bill 77, detectors will be required near all sleeping areas in residential homes and in the service rooms (such as boiler rooms, garbage rooms, etc..) and next to sleeping areas in multi-residential units.

It is mandatory to install at least one CSA-6.19.01 approved carbon monoxide detector outside bedrooms. However, it is strongly advised that one be installed on every floor. Make sure to check the expiry date of all existing detectors and replace any devices built before 2008. Alarms should be replaced every 7-10 years, depending on the brand.

Does Mr. Electric supply and install these?

Yes, Mr. Electric can supply and install the approved smoke/CO detectors – we use the battery back up units so that you are always protected – even in the event of a power failure. Mr. Electric can also check your existing units to ensure they are up to date and safe for use.

IMPORTANT LIFE-SAVING NOTES:

Have a licensed technician inspect your fuel burning appliances (re. furnace, range, fireplace, water heater) annually, to ensure they are in proper working order and vented correctly.

For families with older parents or relatives, help them inspect their detectors.

Replace batteries in your detector annually, or opt for models with 10-year sealed lithium batteries that never need to be changed.

When a detector sounds, make sure everyone is out of the house and call 911. Exposure to carbon monoxide reduces a person’s ability to think clearly, so don’t delay clearing out.
